Bricoleur · Bricoleur: taken from the French word ‘bricolage’, means one that tinkers and fiddles, making creative use of whatever materials are readily available. In his famous work, Savage Mind, anthropologist Lévi-Strauss used the term bricolage to refer to his subjects of research “improvisational recombination of a fixed series of elements” I use the term as a recuperative reflexive gesture, one that accounts for research as a creative improvisational research practice mode of attention and disposition. For me a bricoleur is one who engages in careful, dynamic, ad hoc style of ethnographic work, making creative ethnography out whatever situation and material is close at hand.
